Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
