One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, anime production is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
