The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
