Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
